Contrada Tomassucci
Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Maceratina and Verdicchio
From a 1972 vineyard at 620m with calcareous soils. Predominantly Malvasia Bianca di Candia, with some Maceratina and Verdicchio. Direct pressed and settled before fermentation and ageing in 500L oak. No battonage, racked once after 12 months then bottled after 1 month in tank. Unfined, unfiltered, 13% ABV. Though only a few kms down the road from Contrada Contro, this wine is quite opposite in shape. It is lean, mineral and chalky in texture, more limestone and altitude here. The nose is cool and restrained while the palate is coiled and tense, with apple, and pear and eventually peach on the palate, though framed by this creamy, lime element. The finish is long and savoury, with a seaweed, sake-like umami to it that is delicious. Definitely a wine that will live for a long time, but already excellent drinking now and an undeniable wine of density and quality.
