Malvasia Bianca di Candia
Malvasia Bianca di Candia from 150+ year old 'pie franco' vines trained up maple trees. Spontaneous ferment with a tete de cuve, aged for 12 months in Clayver (high-fired, neutral ceramic) amphora. Bottled without fining, filtration or SO2. 12% ABV The flagship wine was difficult to get a proper read on last year when we were there, it was obviously dense and powerful, but as a young wine a little difficult to penetrate. Fast forward a year and now we get a good glimpse of it, still very compact at this young age, the fruit power is impressive, and the nose is beginning to unfold showing its complex and beautiful bouquet. There's the same peachiness that the other wines display but more of everything, more fruit, more texture. The finish is long and with delicious and beguiling savoury character. As Andrea puts it: 'flavours that no longer exist in modern viticulture', but far beyond a curiosity, this is a very serious and impressive wine, and a testament to the potential for great white wines from this region.
